In this panorama, Dawn Kirk and Jim Smalls, from the George Washington National Forest, are just down from the "Pit of Doom." As part of the rehabilitation of this area they fixed the trail where it was rutting out. Right from the Pit of Doom the water used to run right down the road, through some of the ruts and out the tracks the ATV users made. These went right into the stream here and down and back onto the road below. What was done here was fixing the main trail so now the water diverts off of it in several places and the ruts were also fixed. A new pipe was put in the trail because there is cross drainage here, and this created a ditch line for the water to run through. It was leveled out and seeded, then blocked off so the ATV users couldn't get through. So far it looks like it is holding pretty well. |
