The Lee Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests has much demand for off highway vehicle use. At the Peters Mill ATV area, the Forest Service has embarked upon improving riparian area along Peters Mill Run. Illegal vehicle use and poor soil drainage have compacted soils and changed surface water drainage along the riparian area. Here we are showing illegal traffic control installed to keep vehicles on the designated travel way. Large trees have been pushed across the illegal route. Root wads are also helpful to deter access. Smoothing and draining the trail helps to encourage folks to stay on the designated route, reducing off site rutting of riparian soils. All non-trail bare soil will be reestablished with vegetation.
