Tom Bailey, Jim Smalls and Dawn Kirk, from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, are on Little Stony Creek. This is a site where the Forest Service had applied limestone sand for years. As a result, the water chemistry at this site has become more acidic. This is a high grade of calcium carbonate limestone sand. The particle size is very important. It needs to be large enough to not get washed away, but small enough to be moved readily by the water so an abrasion action occurs and it gets incorporated into the stream bed. This pile of sand will generally spread out about 100 to 200 meters below here and will treat the stream for about 3 to 5 years or maybe a little longer. It will bring the target Ph up to 6 and 6.5 The purpose is to restore the water chemistry for the fish and insects that live in the stream.
