The South Fork of the Shenandoah is a large river in western Virginia. This view is from the Bentonville low water bridge crossing. Massanutten Mountain is the closer mountain seen as you look to the west. Agricultural runoff and a lack of forested riparian buffers are challenges noticed along this stretch of the river. Active streambank erosion is occurring along sections where large trees are absent. On the east bank, behind the two folks pictured, is a river outfitter providing equipment and access for public recreation use of the river. Behind the trees on the west bank, is a parking area, provided by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, for other public users of the South Fork. |
