We are standing on North River Road (FDR 95) on the Dry River Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. This road has historically been impacted by high flow events of the North River drainage. Tremendous amounts of rocky bed load can be seen along the road, much of which is located in the floodplain. Bedload clogs culverts and causes water to tear away section of road during high water. The Forest Service has relocated most of this road upslope from the floodplain to reduce sediment and road damage. The folks pictured are on the old section of North Fork Road looking uphill to a completed new section of the relocation. Eventually 2.5 miles of road will be removed from the floodplain of the North River, an important tributary of the North Fork Shenandoah.
