The North River is a major tributary of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. It carries an extremely rocky bedload. The watershed has rapid runoff due to soils and geology. The U.S. Forest Service is relocating a road and has installed a new bridge to reduce impacts to their transportation system and to the water quality of the North River. Sediment resulting from roads and crossings during flood events will be lessened with these new facilities installed by the Forest Service. A new technique of pouring cementing material over rip rap rock will improve the stability of the roadbed and the bridge abutment. Flooding and high water are common in the watershed. The new bridge design allows more of the rocky bedload to pass through and continue downstream. |
