Peters Mill ATV Trail area on the Lee Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests is a popular place for some folks in the watershed. Off highway riding is a growing interest for National Forest visitors. Here at Peters Mill, the U.S. Forest Service has improved a badly eroding trail head parking area by stabilizing slopes where illegal riding has bared the soil. Silt fencing, seed, fertilizer and mulch was used along with large rocks for controlling access and additional gravel to reduce soil movement. Forested riparian areas, down slope from the parking area, help to trap any soil moving offsite and prevent sediment reaching Peters Mill Run and Passage Creek, which are important tributaries of the Shenandoah River’s North Fork near Front Royal.
