Allotment Buffer 3

Tom Bailey and Nadine Pollack of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, explains that this is a Forest Service grazing allotment on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. There are several of these along this branch of the Shenandoah where the grazing allotment comes right down to the river. There is a general lack of trees and woody vegetation along the edge of the water. Within the next year the Forest Service would like to portion off the area along the river to allow trees and vegetation to come back in, to fence it and keep the cows off. They will also create an alternative water source, by drilling a well, probably, and allow the cows to get their water from a source other than the river.
