This view is along the South Fork Shenandoah River on the Whitting grazing allotment, Lee Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The panorama gives an overview of a small wetland area and forested stream buffer fenced out to eliminate cattle trampling and eutrophication (droppings) and improve water quality. The fence also extends along an old drainage trench and connects to the fence protecting the buffer along the river. This wetland is being monitored to record natural regeneration of vegetation over time with photos and vegetation transects. Zoom in as you look north to better see the fencing. The fencing was made possible by installing new water tanks in the fields, away from stream channels.
