Phil Pannill and Bryan Seipp, Maryland Department of Natural Resources meet with Joe Kalzaret, Biological Technician for the Antietam Battlefield National Park. Joe notes that the forest restoration project in the historic west woods started back in 1995. The National Park Service had to do a lot of research to try to understand the composition of the type of woods that were here at the time of the Antietam Battle. Looking back at soldiers records, case dockets and deeds at the county courthouse, and looking at property owners records they found that these wood lots consisted primarily of oak and hickory, with a lot of other associated native species like black walnut and ash and hackberry. These are found today in the old growth stands near here. Once the composition was understood it was possible to lay out a plan of how to replant this area. |
