Ducks Unlimited is conducting a monitoring study examining wetland plant and animal community responses at newly restored wetland projects. As part of a quantitative assessment of the wildlife value of these restored wetlands, data from avian censuses and wetland vegetation plots will be analyzed to measure how these projects are contributing to Ducks Unlimiteds mission to fulfill the annual life cycle needs of North American waterfowl through wetland conservation.
Other parameters being examined include changes in wetland macroinvertebrate communities over time. Macroinvertebrates are an important food source for wintering waterfowl and migrating shorebirds. As seen here, Matt is collecting a wetland soil sample to collect information on benthic, or bottom-dwelling, macroinvertebrates. A soil core sampler is used to remove a known volume of substrate. This soil sample is flushed with water and run through a 0.5mm screen to separate the invertebrates. The invertebrates are then sorted and numbers of each type are recorded.
