Dave Robbins, from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, notes that this is an example of very poor and inadequate defensible space around a house. Evergreen trees and resinous bushes are growing directly against the house. There is a deck on the downslope side. The house is made of wood siding and a large tree is growing right next to the chimney flue. People who live downhill might want to burn leaves or trash. This burning could potentially start a fire that could race up the hill and ignite this house. These homeowners could do several things to increase their defensible fire space. |
