Featured on the cover of National Geographic in 1945, this view of the Potomac River just a few miles upstream from Washington, DC near Chain Bridge, has remained largely unchanged for centuries. While the National Park Service, protects much of the riverbank in both Maryland and Virginia, a few islands of private land still threaten to destroy the scenic qualities of the Potomac River Gorge.
