The view of Great Falls from the Olmstead Island overlook in the Great Falls National Park is truly an impressive sight. The falls, second only to Niagara Falls on the east coast, are a popular tourist destination and whitewater playground for kayakers and canoists, just minutes from downtown Washington, DC. Great Falls is also the beginning of the Potomac Gorge, an ecologically unique and biologically diverse fifteen-mile river corridor that continues downriver to Theodore Roosevelt Island. The Gorge is ranked by The Nature Conservancy as a globally rare ecosystem and boasts over 400 occurances of 200 rare species and plant communities.
