This view of the meandering North Fork of the Shenandoah River is from an old fire observation tower on the top of Three Top Mountain near Woodstock, Virginia. Looking west, you can see the Great Valley of Virginia and the Appalachian Mountains beyond. The extreme meanders in the river are controlled by the limestone geology of the valley floor. Looking east, you see Fort Valley and Massanutten Mountain nearby and the Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia beyond. The smokey white plume on the horizon to the southeast is a wildfire on the National Park.
