This panoramic displays the benefits of stream restoration techniques which were installed on a farm near Mauzy, VA. Restoration techniques that were installed included root wads, cedar tree revetments, biologs, matting on the bank, planting seed, trees and shrubs in the disturbed area. Previously, the stream was undercutting its banks resulting in bank areas that were nearly vertical and was prone to sloughing and washing into the creek. Vertical banks provide little or no habitat value to fish and other aquatic species. Through the use of the above stream restoration techniques, the stream bank was stabilized to now provide habitat for aquatic organisms and birds, cooler water temperatures, and a significant reduction in suspended sediments in the river. |
