This is a nice overview of the South Fork Shenandoah River from Andy Guest, Jr. Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville, Virginia. This scenic vista from a picnic area offers a look at the variety of landforms and land use in this part of the watershed. Steep forested mountain slopes to grassy open pastureland and cropland and scattered buildings and roads. Flooding limits development along the river. Looking north shows some of the dry site vegetation with mixed hardwoods and pines with shrubby undergrowth. These west and south facing slopes dry out rapidly and can carry wildfire during periods of very low precipitation. |
