The focus of Ducks Unlimited, Inc.’s (DU) Habitat Stewardship Program is on restoring wetlands and associated upland habitats on private and public lands. Wetland restoration projects typically occur on poorly-drained soils and frequently flooded fields with a history of agricultural use. DU Biologists assist interested landowners by identifying potential restoration sites, surveying and designing projects, contacting contractors, supervising construction and working to ensure restoration projects meet the landowners' objectives. DU provides financial compensation to participating landowners in the form of Cost-Share payments ranging from 75% cost-share, up to $1000 per acre of the total restoration project cost.

This wetland restoration project, near Libertytown, MD, drains into the Town Branch, a tributary of Linganore Creek. Under the DU Habitat Stewardship Program and the Conservation Reserve and Enhancement Program (CREP), 37 acres of riparian habitat, consisting of emergent wetlands and riparian forest, were restored in the summer of 2000. These restoration practices are expected to produce a variety of benefiting ranging from to improved water quality to increased wildlife habitat.
