The Antietam Creek flows through an area rich in cultural and natural resources and steeped in history. A series of 11 stone arch bridges, such as this one at Devil’s Backbone County Park, carry the weight of today’s commerce just as they did during the campaigns of the Civil War. Like most large waterways in western Maryland, it is utilized for water supply, wastewater discharge, recreational fishing and canoeing; and is impacted by agricultural, commercial and residential activities.
