The area shown is where some of the heaviest fighting took place during the Battle of Antietam. This is where the left flank of Confederate General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia repelled the advances of Union General McClellan’s Army of the Potomac. In this picture you can see the Dunker Church (small white building to the right of the visitor center) a focal point for the Union attack on the morning of September 17, 1862 during the first phase of the daylong battle. Many men fell here, as the early stages of the bloodiest day in American military history got underway. The Battle of Antietam resulted in 22,726 soldiers killed or wounded, nine times as many American casualties as took place on D-day. Work is underway to restore portions of the battlefield to the forested conditions found in 1862.
